Catalytic Probe Thermometer (3-142) for Consolidated Dutchwest (Federal Airtight, Rocky Mountain, Andirondack) Woodstoves. (1" Probe) Innovative design for accurate measurement of gas temperatures immediately behind a combustor. Registers accurate readings up to 2000° Fahrenheit. Can be retrofitted to most catalytic stoves to comply with EPA monitoring regulations. An indispensable tool for efficient woodstove operation. Signals when to switch off bypass, and when to reduce fire to prevent degrading expensive combustors. Also, indicates declining performance of failing catalyst and the need for replacement. Probes are manufactured of copper for fast heat transmission, then plated for corrosion resistance. Probe end may be placed up to ½-inch away from the combustor, but should not touch it. MADE IN USA. A temperature probe is absolutely essential to monitor a catalytic combustor's performance and the condition of the fire.
It works quite well, but it took a little doing to get it to work that way. When I first saw it right out of the box it was indicating a temperature of 300 deg. Needless to say, this raised a mental flag. I had a good fire fire going and the probe was indicating a catalyst temperature of 1600 deg. This didn't seem possible to me so I threw the probe in a pot of boiling water, which physics dictates, should be 212 deg. It read about 500 deg. I set my oven for 400 deg. using a digital meat thermometer for a reference. The probe indicated a temperature of about 700 deg. By now I was convinced that the probe left the factory severely miscalibrated. I was able to loosen a nut in the back and adjust the dial to a temperature that agreed with me and my references. I should also mention that this was my 2nd probe and I had the same issues with the first one as well. The picture in the ad shows a probe with a scale that starts at 100 deg. and the pointer indicates that too. The probe I got starts at 400 deg. The probe pictured has a multicolored dial, mine doesn't. It also indicates a different catalyst temperature range. I find this a little peculiar. Maybe the laws of physics change depending on the color of the dial.
