Resto 134oz Water Kettle Review

Resto 134oz Water Kettle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the highest-quality kettle I have seen on the market. Thick solid surgical stainless steel, impressive encapsulated bottom for induction cooking (personally, I use it on a gas stove). Manufactured -- the HARD WAY -- out of a single piece of steel, no seams. The spout is welded to the body, then machined/polished smooth so it looks of a single piece with the rest of the kettle. Magnificent workmanship.
You get a 30-year warranty for home use (10 for commercial use). I don't know what such a warranty actually means... but for me it certainly means this will probably be the only piece of cookware that'll be fit to be passed on to the next generations as a treasured heirloom. It's that good.

Before I bought this plug I thought it was kind of strange that other people either loved it or said it didn't work. I see now why that is. If you have a fireplace that has a damper handle sticking down into the fireplace below the damper (like mine) you do not want this plug because it wont work. The handle will get in the way. Fortunately, i bought it from Home depot so i was able to return it.
The package says "can be used in any fireplace" but it is not possible for it to seal if you have a damper handle in the way. I am going to try the different type of chimney balloon that goes in above the damper, or I might just stuff the damper with fiberglass.

Heat Surge Fireplace with Amish Made Mantle Oak Review

Heat Surge Fireplace with Amish Made Mantle Oak
Average Reviews:

I bought two of these and spent almost $700 and I am VERY DISSAPOINTED with their performance. You can't even feel the heat unless you are about a foot away from the unit. I live in California where it doesn't really get that cold in the winter but I was interested in saving money on my heating bill and this thing won't even heat my bedroom. The mantle is oak plywood, not solid oak as advertised. The only good thing about them is that they look nice. The Amish are being used as a marketing tool to sell these fireplaces. All of the parts come from China and are assembled by Amish in Ohio, so don't expect good Amish craftsmanship because you won't get it with a Heat Surge Electric Fireplace.

Kero World KW-24G 23,000-BTU Indoor Portable Convection Kerosene Heater Review

Kero World KW-24G 23,000-BTU Indoor Portable Convection Kerosene Heater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We live in a 3rd story condo, and are planning a New Years party. We just redesigned our patio built benches, made cushions, and I wanted the patio to be comfortable to sit on while outside. Our patio is open to the east, and also open in the nook to the north. So I needed something that was going to produce enough heat to keep the patio warm. We tried two other heaters (electric) before buying this one. They were horrible!
I bought mine at home depot, and they have the fuel there. I think I have a different model (DuraHeat Convection Kerosene Heater Model DH2304), but it is the same amount of BTU's and the the same design, just looks a little different. This heater is amazing...we filled up half the tank, and have used it the last few nights to test it out. It heats up the whole area and keeps the heat coming! I plan on putting a sheet up in the nook using an expandable rod, (don't worry the sheet won't hang near the heater) I just want to try to block some of the cold air from coming in! A lot of heat comes out of the top, so I am hoping it will keep more of the heat in the patio area!
If you are looking for a great patio heater, this is the one to buy! Especially if you live in a condo! I am pretty sure we are not allowed to have propane, plus who wants a 20lb propane tank hanging around! This heater is ok'd for indoor, and if we ever loose our heat, we won't be cold! As long as we have kerosene!
There are instructions for the care of this heater, and I suggest you read them. There is important information about dry burning and cleaning the wick etc. They stress the importance of these things to keep your heater working properly! I am new to this (Giant Lantern) but the instructions are very detailed and easy to understand! Good luck!

The Kero World portable indoor kerosene heater is great for heating small to medium indoor spaces (up to 900 square feet). Matchless ignition makes this a convenient source of instant heat--without having to plug it in, either. The built-in 1.9-gallon tank gives you up to 12 hours of heat. The manufacturer recommends using only clean kerosene. Two-year warranty.--Josh Dettweiler

Five Tips for Buying a HeaterChoosing a space heater is a matter of sifting through a bewildering array of types, power ratings, and fuel sources. Let's break it down a little to make the process easier.

What are the different types of space heaters?
Radiant heaters emit infrared radiation that directly warms the objects in front of the heaters (rather than the surrounding air). If you only need heat by a desk or in a small section of a room, a radiant heater is quiet and will use very little power.
Forced-air heaters use a fan to blow air that has been warmed by metal or ceramic heating elements. A forced-air heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but can be noisy.
Convection heaters draw cold air from the floor; the air is warmed by heating coils and emitted from the top of the heater. A convection heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but also can be noisy.
Radiators work by heating oil enclosed in a reservoir, gradually heating the surrounding air. If heating speed isn't an issue, you might want to opt for a radiator. These are extremely quiet and effective--perfect for bedrooms.

Should I buy an electric or a combustion model? If you want a heater that will be available in emergencies, or that can heat areas larger than a single room, choose a "combustion" model--one that is powered by a gas or fuel like propane, kerosene, natural gas, or diesel. Which fuel type you choose depends largely on convenience and local availability. For example, diesel would be appropriate for a heater you take with you on long car trips.

How powerful a heater do I need?Heaters are rated by BTU, which stands for British Thermal Unit (the amount of heat needed to heat one pound of water by 1 degree F). To find out how many BTU you need:
Calculate the volume of the space to be heated by multiplying square footage by height.
Multiply that number by 4 if your insulation is poor, 3 if it's average, or 2 if it's good.
The resulting number is a ballpark figure for how many BTU you'll need.
Do space heaters cost a lot to operate? As a general rule, electric space heaters are more expensive to use than combustion models. To ensure energy efficiency, a thermostat is a must-have feature for any heater. For radiant heaters, models with a 360 degree heating surface can heat larger spaces. If you need a forced-air heater, models with ceramic elements tend to be more efficient.

Are space heaters a fire hazard?Space heaters are implicated in about 25,000 residential fires every year. To ensure proper safety, always follow the manufacturer's usage instructions and fill out the warranty card to receive informational updates from the manufacturer. Also, look for extra safety features such as an automatic shutoff switch that can shut down the unit if, for example, it gets upended. In addition, choose a model where the heating element is adequately enclosed within the unit.

CobraCo FB6200 Cast Iron Fireplace with Cover Review

CobraCo FB6200 Cast Iron Fireplace with Cover
Average Reviews:

I do like the design and size. It's a bit smaller then my last one but that's okay. Anything made in China is typically crap, but for a firepit, no big deal. The holes for the tubular frame that the base sits into did not line up, forcing me to modify it so they line up properly to use the screws provided. The powder coating paint they use on the screen is bare minimal. After one rainfall and forgetting to put the cover back on, it started showing rust already. So I HIGHLY suggest using the cover! Speaking of which, the cover is really an over glorified double lined plastic garbage bag, so always be careful sliding it over the pit, it rips easily! The base itself is heavy to be sure, so it won't rust for years, being cast iron and all. The other thing I'm not crazy about is cleaning out the ashes. There is triangular rods that cover the intake air holes at the base of the cast iron that are welded on..........well.........some of them are welded.....lol. They get in the way of using anything flat, like a dustpan, to scoop up the ashes and such. So if you're not anal like I am, you'll always have some ashes left in it. It is heavy to be sure. Very awkward for one person to move, if you need to. We move ours out of the way when not in use, so I built a dolly with wheels for it, making it much easier. All in all, it's.........okay.

I purchased this fireplace back in 2009 and only now have decided to write a review. As I am writing this review, I am watching the reflections of the flames in the window as the rain falls outside. The fireplace does work well. I can get about a 45 minute burn with the fire pits at 2/3 full.
As mentioned in the package instructions, the fireplace can generate a fair amount of heat up to at least three feet in front and above. After all, it burns real fire. :) I put the fireplace on a drywall in my bedroom. When I use the fireplace, I take down the wall decor hanging above the fireplace.
The molly bolts supplied with fireplace did not work properly on my drywall (I am not much of handyman. You may have better luck.) I had to buy another set Walldog 1.25 " screw and anchor bolts to properly attach the mountings to the drywall.
The fireplace surface also scratches easily. So, be careful when handling it.

Duraflame 00647 Colorlog Firelog 6 Pack Review

Duraflame 00647 Colorlog Firelog 6 Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I really like Duraflame logs, so much so that we don't even bother with real wood fires anymore-- it's just not worth the hassle. Of course it's not exactly the same, and you don't get as much heat... But the effect, convenience and price make up for it. I can have a nice full fire burning all night for around $2 and don't have to deal with the wood delivery, storage, splitting anymore.
The only reason I'm lowering the score is the Duraflame Colorlogs just don't have the promised effect. They work and burn just fine, but the colored flames are barely noticeable. To my eye, its just the same orange flame, with only a sliver of blue or purple here and there around the edges.
I would recommend using the normal 4 hour duraflame logs because they last longer-- at least 3.5 hours on average. I usually cut the logs in half and use a small amount of starter gel to get them burning faster. The smaller logs still give the same flame height and full burn time--at half the price. I also stick the logs in the middle of a gas-style 'concrete log set' and it looks very similar like a wood fire. We've had more than a few guests surprised that it wasn't.

12 inch Carbon Steel Wok w/ Helper Handle (flat bottom) USA made Review

12 inch Carbon Steel Wok w/ Helper Handle (flat bottom) USA made
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a nice carbon steel wok, made in USA as well. I had used larger size ones before, but now I prefer a 9-12" wok for ease of control. It has a laminated wood handle, which is a very good heat insulator and water-proof. The wok is relatively thin, but sturdy. Thus, it is not too heavy. In addition, this wok has a relatively steeper curvature, so tossing foods is easy with this wok. The main handle (the straight one) is detachable, but it is extremely stable once it is attached. As mentioned, I had also owned the two larger versions and their handles have always been sturdy. The helper handle (the loop one) is not rotatable: the wood part is not symmetric along the axis and therefore prevents it from rotating on the steel core. Almost all the other carbon steel woks I found locally have a free-to-rotate wood handle and I do not like that flimsy feel. Carbon steel woks need to be seasoned before its first use and need to be seasoned occasionally afterward. This wok is no exception. After seasoning, the wok becomes stick resistant. I have upload a customer image to show the appearance of a seasoned wok. If you own a cast iron skillet, then you know this. Seasoning a cookware can be time consuming, but it is also rewarding. If you are new to stir fry and have never seasoned a cookware before, then you may want to consider learning with a nonstick wok first.
I have purchased many cooking tools from the Wok Shop. It is always a pleasure buying online from the Wok Shop. In fact, I used to live in the Bay Area, 30 minutes away from San Francisco Chinatown where the actual Wok Shop resides. Most of its customers are Chinese. If you have a chance, you should swing by and visit. It is a nice little store filled with helpful people and unique items. The Wok Shop always promptly ships out your goods. Usually, you will get your goods in about 1 week (from my 4 online purchase experience).
***Background Information for People who are New to Carbon-steel Woks***
You may ask why go through all the troubles to season a cookware, why not uses a nonstick wok? The reason is simple: taste. Just like a nonstick skillet cannot match a cast iron skillet, a nonstick wok cannot touch a carbon steel wok. To stir fry properly, foods (especially meats) need to be cook at high temperature in a short period of time. Nonstick cookware simply cannot tolerate the heat requirement. Stainless steel, carbon steel and cast iron can handle the high temperature. The problem for a stainless steel wok is that it cannot be seasoned, so meats stick to it easily. Not only this is a challenge for cooking, but it is also a problem for cleaning. A cast iron wok is fairly well-respected. It retains heat well and it is also stick-resistant when seasoned. However, it is slightly heavier and its heat response time is slower. In order words, it is more difficult to handle and it takes a longer time to heat up and cool down. Most importantly, cast iron is more brittle, so a cast iron wok can crack if not correctly handled. This is why carbon steel is the most popular material for Chinese woks. It is inexpensive, light weight, and has a relatively good heat response. It is also stick-resistant when seasoned. Is it perfect? No. It takes time to season, its seasoned coating (patina) can wear off, and its heat capacity is lower than that of a cast iron wok. Keep in mind, its advantages far outweigh its disadvantages. Different material has different advantages and a cook need to know the strengths and weaknesses of his/her cookware. I have recently wrote a review on the Calphalon One Infused-Anodized 10-Inch Stir Fry Pan. It is a good pan but it is not as authentic as this wok. The Calphalon pan has the advantages of no seasoning is required and it can cook watery foods without the risk of rusting. However, the Calphalon pan is more expensive, easy to scratch, and foods do stick to it.
Finally, it is useful to purchase a brush for a carbon steel wok or for a cast iron wok. Every now and then, small amount of foods will stick to the cookware. Unlike a stainless steel wok, you should avoid using a steel wool to get the foods off. It will just scratch up the seasoning surface. You want something softer. Therefore, a bamboo wok brush is prefect. It is hard enough to get most of the stuck foods off, and soft enough not to scratch the cookware. Bamboo also has antibacterial property, so you do not have to clean a bamboo brush very often. This is another reason why I like bamboo rayon kitchen towel, but that is another story. If you do not know where to get a bamboo brush, the Wok shop sells an inexpensive 7" Cleaning Whisk. Of course, you do not have to have a bamboo brush, most dish brushes will work. An old credit card also works.

This heavy 14-gauge wok is an easy and fun to use. The natural, blond, wooden handle and side spool handle allows the cook full command of the wok. The flat bottom wok is designed to sit directly on an electric stove or ceramic stovetop to take advantage of all the heat. Wok cooking is done with high heat. The flat bottom wok also works very efficiently on a gas stove. If cooking with gas, the same wok is available in round bottom. Wok measures 4" in depth. Cooking recommendations: 12" for up to 5 people, 14" for 6 to 12 people, and 16" for over 12 people. Must be seasoned.

Fitz-All Set of 2 Replacement Pot Knobs with Finger Guards

The knobs are handy replacements for broken knobs not available from the manufacturer. I ordered the item to repair a broken knob on a slow cooker.
Glad there were two in the pack. First problem was the supplied screws were too short to use on the cover. I purchased longer stainless steel screws at a local hardware store. I overtightened the first one and cracked the heat shield. Fortunately there was another in the package to use.
I used the cover only once so far and the knob worked o/k but got loose. I think I'll add a lock washer to eliminate that problem.
All in all glad this product is available to replace original knobs otherwise the appliance would be unusable.

Char Broil Magnum 500 Four-Burner Gas Grill, with Sideburner Review

Char Broil Magnum 500 Four-Burner Gas Grill, with Sideburner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I see so many people that submit reviews here that don't even own the product. Well, I own a very similar Charbroil, so I can actually tell you how great it is.
Is a Weber better? Certainly. It also costs two to three times as much.
I can say that the Charbroil I have gets up to 500-600 degrees, perfect for searing meats. And everything we have grilled on it has been fantastic.
It is not made of high grade materials. Why? Because they cost much more. But they don't make the grill cook better, they make it last longer. So, you have to decide if paying $900 for a grill that lasts 10 years (you will still have to replace the innards two times) or a grill that lasts 3-4 years that costs 1/3 the price is best for you.
Personally, I like the latter. And there are ways to make sure your grill lasts as long as possible no matter what you buy. First thing I do out of the box is coat every stainless steel piece with WD-40. Every screw as well. And always the side burner. This rejects some of the moisture that builds up in these units.
Get a good cover. It makes a huge difference. A cover you can easily put on and take off is key, because you will use it, which, of course, is the only way it is effective.
I also take vasoline to every exposed screw and moving joint in the unit. I skip the ones that heat up, but there are so many places where rust can begin and it cannot begin under vasoline.
Repeating this process before winter and in the spring does wonders.
The burners will rust. Part of the deal. They rust in all grills because the heat impacts them dramatically. Be prepared to replace them at least once in the four years this grill performs for you.
Finally, look for Charbroil's and the like on sale. When you buy an expensive grill, they are rarely discounted that much. But Charbroil's and the like have regular clearances. We bought a last season model almost identical to this one, but that came with a rotisserie, for $199 (It sold for $369 the year before). And we got two free tanks of propane for our trouble.
Comparing a Charbroil to a Weber is like comparing a Camry to a high end Lexus. The Lexus, certainly, is a better car. But in reality, they both do exactly the same thing and the Camry costs a small fraction of the price. Compare apples to apples and never rank a product you don't own. It is unfair to those considering the product.

Nordic Ware Kettle Smoker Indoor / Outdoor Cooker Review

Nordic Ware Kettle Smoker Indoor / Outdoor Cooker

I grew up in Texas, and I know good BBQ. And the best (and IMHO, ONLY) way to cook BBQ is "low and slow" - cook at low temperatures and for long periods of time. You have to be patient to cook good BBQ. You have to get the internal meat temperature to hit 185 degrees in order to break down the fats to make the meat (beef) tender, and if the temperature is too high it over-cooks and can dry out the outer layers. And my, and my kids, favorite BBQ is slow smoked beef ribs. We have an outdoor BBQ that makes awesome ribs. The trouble is that now that I live in northern California (not a decent Texas style BBQ place anywhere), the winters are rainy, wet and a little cold. So when I came upon this indoor smoker I was cautiously enthusiastic. While the concept looked sound, the real issue is with the wood chips. I was afraid that in such a small cooker the wood chips would all burn up within the first hour or so, basically leaving the meat to slow roast for several hours. But at only about $70 I thought, what the heck I'll give it a try. Even though this product/seller wasn't listed as Prime 2-day shipping, the product arrived very fast - within a week. It came full assembled - all I had to do was insert the thermometer - which is a CRUCIAL part to slow smoking. So I washed the parts, put double the recommended amount of hickory shavings (almost saw dust consistency) in the bottom and loaded the meat tray with my overnight-rubbed beef ribs and some beef oxtails that I happened upon in my local Safeway. I put it on my electric stove and set the control to Medium. Here's a difference - the instructions call for "medium high" heat to start - I used medium because I didn't want it to get too hot too soon and burn up all the wood chips too early. It worked great. ** Don't forget to turn on your exhaust fan over your stove! While it doesn't give off enough smoke to see, you can really smell it and it can be a little overwhelming, permeating your whole house. ** Also, please look at where the temperature probe sticks down into the cooking area and make sure that you keep your meat away from it so that when you put on the lid the probe isn't touching any meat. It took about 1 hour for the temperature to get up to 180 degrees, and at that point I turned down the stove to med-low. In another hour it was up to 200 degrees. I left it there for 2.0 hours and then turned up the stove 1/2 mark closer to medium. The temperature rose to 210 degrees where I left it for the final 2 hours. So the complete cooking cycle looked like: 1 hour warm up, 1 hour at 190, 3 hours at 200, and 2 hours at 210. Also note that during the transition between 200 to 210 degrees I turned it up to Medium for about 3-4 minutes to have it create some additional smoke. I did this as a test - and this was how I learned that there were still good chips left that could create additional smoke. Please also note that smoke is being created at the lower settings but it is just too low to see. Your nose is the proof.
All stoves are different, especially gas versus electric, so you'll have to learn how yours reacts as you go. I was lucky in that my very first BBQ worked to perfection. All of the meat was melt-in-your mouth tender, and the smoked flavor was perfect. Now I can smoke meats any time I want and way more frequently because this thing is small and so easy to use. Please line the drip pan with heavy duty aluminum foil! Even though it is non-stick, that melted fat is always hard to clean off. The meat tray is also non-stick and cleaned very easily. The bottom piece and the bottom of the drip pan were another story - these took a little more effort, but WAY worth it. Another pre-concern I had was the amount of meat it would hold. It is definitely smaller than any outdoor smoker, but again I was pleasantly surprised. This thing cooks enough meat (beef) for two meals for myself and two kids. One good sized chicken should fit, too. All-in-all, an awesome product. If and when this thing ever wears out I will definitely buy another one. Indoor, slow smoked BBQ any time of the year!

Dimplex DFI2309 Electric Fireplace Insert Heater, Black Review

We have an old coal fireplace which is only 8" deep. We could not find any type of gas flame logs that would fit at all. This product installed easily and fit almost perfectly into the space. We still get the look of a fire and additional heat. The heater aspect of it has a high & low setting and is very quiet. Another advantage point is we don't have to worry about small children getting to close to a flame and getting burnt. I am very pleased with this product.

Landmann Fire Starter Review

Landmann Fire Starter

I use these to start fires in our fireplace this winter. They work very well. They burn hot and last fairly long. In almost all cases, I can start a log fire without any kindling. This assume that the wood is dry.
I find that you typically need 2, sometimes 3, packets to start a large stack of wood in a firelpace For a small fire, like a campfire, once should suffice.
I will be buying these again.

Old Dutch 2 Quart Solid Copper Teakettle With Wooden Handle Review

Old Dutch 2 Quart Solid Copper Teakettle With Wooden Handle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this kettle based on the description that it was "solid copper" even though it came with a lacquer coating that would have to be removed before heating water. It looked nice enough when I received it, but once I decided to tackle the lacquer removal, it took much longer for the lacquer to soften (20 - 30 minutes versus the manufacturers statement of 5-10 minutes) and when I started to clean the residue off of the surface (again following the manufacturer's instructions) the copper started to rub off!!!
After contacting the manufacturer, it turns out that it is only a copper finish, not solid copper, and the description was a "typing error" on the part of the manufacturer (per their communication). If you want a functional copper kettle, don't buy this one unless you don't care about still having a copper finish once the lacquer is removed. The copper coating is so thin, it will rub off with only one cleaning!
I am returning it ASAP!
